bags part of your anatomy, says handbag awards founder

Handbag

Urban armor? Status symbol? Best friend? Try body part. “It’s essentially an additional appendage,” Handbag Designer 101 founder Emily Blumenthal explained of her favorite accessory at last night’s second annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards. The WWD and Henri Bendel-sponsored event (Blumenthal’s brainchild), held at the New-York Historical Society, honored both icon Judith Leiber as well as a serious crowd of talented unknowns. Culled from over 600 entries, the 25 finalists first had to pass muster with Blumenthal, who admitted that she simply doesn’t covet big-name designer wares, preferring instead to sport what she’s created herself. “To this day, I still can’t justify carrying anybody else’s but my own. As a businesswoman, as an entrepreneur, you’re your own PR machine!” she said. Last night’s winners included: Clara Yoo (Best Student Handbag), Darren Wallace (Best Handmade Handbag), Helen Marcoschamer (Best Green Handbag), Bridget Reid (Most Socially Responsible Handbag), Suzanna Scarola (Audience Fan Favorite), and Lui Antinous (Best Overall Handbag, above).
