burberry springs forward with granny cardies

Though we’ve heard more than one designer complain that all this attention paid to Resort collections is putting a cramp in their sketching, Burberry’s Christopher Bailey is hitting the circuit in stride. “I love it,” he said yesterday afternoon at Burberry’s New York headquarters. “We’ve always done it; the only difference is that now we’re showing it to the press. But I think Resort is a great thing—it means that women can’t wait for that November delivery.” He also let us in on a little design secret: His Resort collections always include a hint of what he’s going to do for Spring (in other words, think chunky chains, brocade skirts, and granny cardigans). Asked if he feels like he might be giving away some confidential trend information, he said that when he was in school, he wasn’t the type to hide his answers from the kid sitting next to him. “I’ve never been bothered by that. I’m really focused with what I’m doing.” What he’s been doing is working hard, but he’s taking a break from that this weekend to focus on sun protection, hitting the Hamptons with caution. “I have to take care of my pale British skin,” he chuckled.
