cardboard karl goes to london

Rei Kawakubo’s quirky Dover Street Market, fashion’s answer to a curio shop, is an ideal choice for the Chanel pop-up store that launched last night, especially given that the stock consists of items cherry-picked from the house’s equally quirky Métiers d’Art collection, the satellite range that was created in 2002 as a tribute to its great ateliers. There to inaugurate the London venture, which will be open through June 26, were in-house muse Lady Amanda Harlech; Guinness heirs Daphne (”It’s a breakthrough collection. There are definitely some pieces that I am keeping my eye on,” she said) and Jasmine; and models Jade Parfitt, Saffron Aldridge, and Astrid Muñoz. Although Karl Lagerfeld didn’t Eurostar over from Paris, life-size cardboard cutouts of him appeared on all four floors as well as on the building’s rooftop terrace, making his presence inescapable even for those sneaking out for a smoke. But then, you can never really escape the influence of the Kaiser, can you?
