With all the rumors going round about the imminent temporary closing of Colette due to renovations, we thought we’d go straight to the source to set the record straight. “Let’s call it a lifting,” says Sarah Lerfel of the seven-week period, which is due to start on July 7. Japanese architect Masamichi Katayama has been enlisted to orchestrate a major changeover that involves the repositioning of streetwear (which descends to the ground floor) and beauty (which will be merchandised upstairs, alongside fashion). Also set for an overhaul is the first-floor art gallery and basement water bar, although neither are moving. Those experiencing retail shock over the idea of not being able to access the boutique—this is the first time in its 11-year history that it will be closed for any length of time—need not fear being cut off completely, however: A mini version will be parked outside the store, complete with classic Colette products and an assortment of limited-edition sportswear. As for the mother-and-daughter team behind the store, founders Lerfel and Colette Rousseau will be taking a break (albeit briefly) during the changeover. Lerfel described her vacation plans as: “a two-day break in Arles to see some art.”
