“They wanted orange, and I wanted her not to look like a dancing pumpkin,” explains Madga Berliner of the costume she designed for tonight’s Dancers’ Choice program presented by the New York City Ballet. “I wound up facing the orange in a super-sheer heather gray, and then painting gold leaf on the underside.” A self-confessed high-culture fanatic, Berliner was an easy sell on the idea of creating a one-off piece for the NYCB’s first annual Dancers’ Choice performance tonight. “The program was initiated to raise funds for the Ballet’s Dancers’ Emergency Fund,” she says. “And given how much I love the ballet, and how much pleasure those dancers have given me, it seemed like the least I could do to give a little something back.” Fashion-forward divas should steal a trick from the NYCB the next time they’re planning something special for the Met—Berliner is an opera freak, too.
