Michael Stipe wasn’t the only mild-mannered rock star to be found at last night’s Rogan vs. Stipe opening at the new Rogan shop on the Bowery. Invitees who got a jump on the crowd and arrived in time to get a good look at Stipe’s bronze castings of cassette tapes, radio alarm clocks, and Polaroid cameras also got a chance to bump elbows with Coldplay’s Chris Martin. That’s, like, one world-famous rock star per square yard! Good show, Rogan Gregory. “Well, Michael and I have been friends for a while,” said Gregory. “I’m hoping to do a lot of collaborations like this now that we have the space,” he added, as Stipe walked up with Martin at his heels. So what was the cassette the R.E.M. frontman sacrificed to the cast? “Um, the tapes are bronze all the way through,” Stipe replied, between blinding flashes from the event photog. Martin leaned out of frame. “He had a hundred copies of ‘Thriller,’ ” he stage-whispered. “He just doesn’t want to admit it.”
