saved by the bell: the return of alternative denim silhouettes

“We loved the worn quality of vintage, but the fit was never right, so it was a constant process of buying and customizing. Eventually,” says stylist/designer Emily Current of the denim line she’s just launched with partner Meritt Elliott, “we thought, maybe there’s a business here…” Thus: Current/Elliott, which lands at Barneys next month. Editor pre-orders were through the roof—especially for Current/Elliott staples such as washed-out, just-baggy-enough boyfriend jeans and snug denim jackets. Both looks have been out of the mainstream long enough that Current and Elliott are eager to have them back, and apparently, their fashion-insider friends agree. “I’ve got nothing against a great pair of skinnies,” says Elliott, “but I think people are ready to play with other silhouettes. Personally, I’ve never stopped wearing styles like bell-bottoms. In fact, that’s how I met Emily—I saw a girl in a fantastic pair of vintage bells, and I thought, I don’t know that girl, but I like her. And I want those jeans.”
