the laws of indoor shades at thakoon

There’s more to a good pair of shades than, um, meets the eye–especially if they’re made by Thakoon Panichgul, the designer explained at Thursday night’s launch of his new sunglass line at Soho’s Ilori boutique. For the lenses, the designer favored pinkish brown and a smoky clear shade that “sort of gives the face air.” For the frames, he went high-tech, explaining a complicated technique of combining colors by fusing instead of gluing. More importantly: Can we wear them inside? There were plenty of fashion experts in the room—Jessica Joffe and Vogue’s Sally Singer among them—capable of fielding this quandary of the would-be fabulous. But Vogue senior accessories editor Filipa Fino weighed in with an authority in line with her job title. “If you have eye problems, you’re allowed,” said Fino. “If you’re a superstar like Jack Nicholson—or like my boss—you’re allowed.” Otherwise? “Otherwise, there’s nothing worse than getting into a restaurant and seeing a guy trying to impress girls with eyewear on.”
