when it rains, it polos

The monsoon that hit Governor’s Island early Saturday afternoon threatened to flood the field, but the downpour was no match for the determined crowd that had gathered to watch the inaugural Manhattan Polo Classic (the first polo match played in New York City in 70 years, we might add), hosted by Veuve Clicquot. When rainwater started gushing into the VIP tent, the event’s hosts simply handed out ponchos and used golf umbrellas to escort guests to a nearby warehouse, where a bar was improvised on top of empty oil drums and the DJ set up shop on the concrete floor. A drenching of another sort took place after the match, when victorious Black Watch captain Nacho Figueras engaged in a Champagne war with his Asprey rival, Mauricio Devrient. Polo, good music, and two handsome men hosing each other down with Veuve Clicquot? We can’t wait until next year.
