zero to ten for maria cornejo

Maria Cornejo marked a decade of design with a party last night at the Bleecker Street space she’s soon to make her new flagship, and to celebrate, she dug into her archives for a “best of” presentation of Zero + Maria Cornejo over the years. “You know, people see the shows now, they see the clothes at Barneys, but they don’t see the process, they don’t get to access the ideas,” she explained. “I wanted to show the development.” With that in mind, Cornejo has also reworked ten signal Zero dresses into her new Resort 2009 collection, and will be releasing a book charting her brand’s evolution in the fall. In the meantime, partygoers had done some digging of their own: More than a few loyal Zero fans showed up in dresses they confessed to having bought years earlier at Cornejo’s soon-to-close Mott Street space. But Cornejo, having wandered into the past to mark her brand’s anniversary, how has her eyes fixed firmly on the future. “I know a lot of my shoppers are going to miss Mott Street,” she acknowledged, “and I probably will, too. But it’s time. Ten years is long enough to be in one place. I’m ready to expand.”
