chris benz’s mykonos diary

Mykonos2

Arriving on the tarmac at Mykonos airport, you’re instantly transported to another decade, when Jacqueline Onassis would wander the streets in bug-eyed sunglasses and a head scarf. I’ve been coming here every summer for the past five years, and I always stay at the Belvedere Hotel, a super-chic 30-room hotel located at the top of chora (Greek for “town”).

Mykonos has loads of hidden beaches all around the rocky coastline, and the best daytime adventure is to rent ATV four-wheelers and race around the island in search of the next great beach. This summer, I love the Psarou Beach and Nammos Beach Club. It’s a gorgeous full-service beach with tan waiters in white cargo shorts, a hopping restaurant, and even an outpost of the venerable Athens style outpost Luisa.

Come nightfall, my fellow guests and I organize large group dinners at the restaurants in town. These loud, family-style events can run for hours, with the venue eventually resembling more of a nightclub dance-off than a restaurant! By the end of the meal, the tradition is for everyone to do rounds of ouzo or masticha shots, eat watermelon, dance on tables, break plates, and twirl around with napkins.
