london’s a-list sober, but still “obsessed” by testino

“Why aren’t you at Couture?” a Givenchy-clad lady was overhead asking Lillian von Stauffenberg. “And miss this?” von Stauffenberg responded. “Darling, please!” The bar went dry 20 minutes into the event—not that anyone cared, as the people-watching was too good. It was Mario Testino’s big night, the opening party for his photography exhibition “Obsessed by You” at Phillips de Prury & Company, and even he looked taken aback by the star wattage in attendance. “It’s a great party. A great turnout,” he said, looking askance. Indeed, it was. Roll call, please: Tom Ford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, David Furnish, Charlotte Casiraghi, Olympia Scarry, Dasha Zhukova, Trudie Styler, Astrid Muñoz, Michael Roberts, Lily Safra, Jessica de Rothschild, a clutch of Guinnesses, and retail heavyweights like Sir Philip Green and Sir Stuart Rose all showed up to the admire the Peruvian lensman’s body of work. As for the lack of alcohol, appropriate to Testino’s aesthetic, topless and buff male waiters tried to distract people into not noticing that it was water they were serving, not wine. Less logical: a marching band in full regalia, which made a somewhat random appearance in the middle of the enormous space.
