when in rome, wait for it

The invitation, which many of us were clutching in a bit of a sweaty panic outside the Hotel Eden, stipulated that the Gucci Resort show would start at 7:30 p.m., the dinner an hour later, and then the Goldfrapp performance that was to follow that at around 10 p.m. Odd, then, that about a dozen editors and fashion fans were pacing, smoking, and gossiping (some of us doing all three at once) outside the hotel, waiting for the promised transport to the venue well after the designated start time. “It’s coming,” someone who had spoken to someone at the event said, adding that even though it was 8 p.m., no one was at the venue yet. “But don’t worry. Rome is late, always.” Indeed, the show started more than an hour behind its scheduled time and Goldfrapp made its debut around midnight. But no one seemed to mind the hours of idle. Perhaps it was the Champagne, or perhaps it was the first relatively chilly night—following a week-long heat wave—that kept everyone cool, but spirits were high. In the front row, Claire Danes had such a laugh waiting with her beau, Hugh Dancy, that at one point she was actually slapping her knee. Yes, Claire Danes is a knee-slapper. We are obliged to note here, however, that more than one guest remarked that if Tom Ford were still at Gucci, the cars wouldn’t have been late. And the drivers would have been handsome. And topless. “I’ve been in Italy for three weeks,” said Rosetta Getty, the L.A.-based designer of Riser Goodwyn, who has been relaxing with her four kids and pal Patricia Arquette in the Tuscan sun and making quick trips to Paris for Couture and Rome for this Gucci event. “And it’s a whole other situation. Right now, we’re on Roman time.”
