a taste of france, on the beach

We consider ourselves connoisseurs when it comes to the business of French dining. Which is why we’re recommending Anisette, a sublime new brasserie in Santa Monica, as the closest you’ll get to Paris on the West Coast. If not for the wood paneling, stained mirrors, checkerboard tile floors, vintage fixtures, and the Edith Piaf soundtrack, then for its classic menu, which includes favorites such as côte de boeuf, French onion soup served with cave-aged Gruyère, a first-rate salade niçoise, and pommes frites served in a cone. Spotted there recently: Cindy Crawford, Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks, and Keanu Reeves. Although there’s no word on whether or not chef Alain Giraud emerged from the kitchen midway through the meal to recount naughty French jokes for them as he did for us and our table of girlfriends. Comedie française? Mais oui, cherie.
