fashion flowers in south africa

August 28, 2008  1:08 pm

The fashion cycle is moving faster and faster all over the world, but at Sanlam South Africa fashion week it just went into overdrive. Franz Grabe Flower Couture and international gold jewelry brand AuDITIONS co-presented the week’s opening show, a collection of 18 ensembles that married the lasting beauty of gold jewelry with the ephemeral pleasures of nature. The inspired couture designs were constructed from twigs, thorns, reeds, leaves, and flowers interwoven with gold bangles, brooches, rings, and futuristic body pieces from South Africa and Brazil, worth an estimated $775,000. Franz Grabe is known for its elaborate floral creations, while AuDITIONS‘ global competitions yield some of the world’s most progressive gold jewelry, and their collaboration highlighted the paradoxically ubiquitous yet fleeting influence of contemporary clothing design. By the end of the show some of the flowers had already began to wilt and die, bringing new meaning to the term “fast fashion.”
