Forget Matte or Glossy, Go For the Carpet

Cameras are now gadgets that make snapping photographs effortless. Yet some images are too precious to relegate to digital or even printed archives. In “Waiting for Returns” at the Zurich branch of Hauser & Wirth, Swiss artist Caro Niederer goes beyond merely framing her snapshots. She turns shots of a lakeside family outing, tennis lesson, and her adorable daughter into lustrous, three-meter-long silk carpets, knotted in China. The meticulous effort and attention Niederer dedicated to these swiftly and simply created images makes one wonder, why single out these particular photographs? Says Niederer, “My work revolves around the subject of memory and the question of what remains that is valuable.” Here, the unquestionable worth of her art offers its own answer.

This reminds me of Shirana Shahbazi’s work. She did a similar project in 2004.
