multiple chairs

Recycling has been a major fashion influence since the year 2000, when lines like Imitation of Christ brought new life to castoff clothing. A show at the Berlin-based Appel Design gallery makes an eloquent case for embracing more than just dustbin-bound clothing. Titled “Lost Chairs,” the show began when curator and owner Tilmann Appel took a drive one weekend and spotted a battered, weather-worn green chair. He scooped it up, took it home, and began slowly amassing a collection of quirky pieces. His anti-elitist approach encompasses both high and low, from a green plastic one-legged Mickey Mouse chair to iconic pieces like Giancarlo Piretti’s Plia. Appel is concerned with commerce as well as concepts—some of his recent shows include surveys of Pierre Sala and George Nelson’s work—but in this exhibition none of the pieces are for sale. At the end of its run, he’ll likely give most of the chairs away. If you’re in Berlin, stop by the gallery and maybe you can take a seat.
