prime-time philosophy from vienna

August 26, 2008  5:30 pm

In our Juicy Couture world, it sometimes seems like there’s little room for conceptual designers more interested in the unbearable lightness of being than making people look like fashionable beach bums. Which makes us all the more thankful for House of the Very Island’s Royal Club Division Middlesex Klassenkampf But the Question Is Where Are You, Now?, an ambitious effort (just saying the name takes some ambition, truth be told) from a collective of designers based in Vienna. Supporting ecological sustainability and smashing gender stereotypes are just two of its politically minded motivations, and, luckily, the collection lives up to the high-minded hype. The group’s latest effort is stitched from organic cotton, hand-woven denim, and soya/bamboo/cotton blends, and hand-painted using plant dyes. Titled “Infinite Prime,” it’s built around experiments with that unisex staple of modern life, the T-shirt, and involves a mathematical approach much too complicated for this fashion writer to elucidate. Suffice it to say, it’s geek chic to the nth degree. For more information, see www.houseofthe.com.
