backstage with lela rose

The clothes on Lela Rose’s runway on Sunday were pretty cute—if “cute” is the right word for a dress like Rose’s ikat-print cocktail stunner, and maybe it’s not. But even the designer was willing to concede that, as far as adorableness goes, the looks on the catwalk had nothing on the crowd backstage. There were kids everywhere, and the sight of Rose’s toddler, Rosie, trying to lead the family terrier around the crowd was enough to melt the heart of even the iciest fashionista. “Trust me, I know—when she’s around, you can’t pay attention to anything else,” Rose said of her cherubic-looking daughter, who turns two in November and is blonde like her mama. Talk of towheadedness brought Rose back around to her Masai-inspired show, however, as she reminisced about her first trip to Africa. “I was traveling in areas where people had never seen blond hair before. And at the time, I had braces, so they were also really interested in the way I had, ahem, decorated my teeth.” According to Rose, she didn’t manage to make a return visit to Africa prior to creating her Spring ‘09 collection, but in any case memory sufficed. “It was never my intention to do an ‘Africa’ collection. I just wanted to find ways to make some of those references relevent to the girls who wear my clothes. And anyway,” she added, with a glance at Rosie, “I’ve got this going on, so, you know…”
