blasblog: abby lee’s stumble and fall

September 9, 2008  2:50 pm

It wouldn’t be fashion season without a tumble or two. The big spill to date happened today at Rodarte (those are the instructions given to the models at left), in front of VIP front row-ers Diane von Furstenberg, Elijah Wood, and Natalie Portman. While it’s always a little cringe-worthy when a girl takes a stumble on the runway, this time, as we watched sweet Abbey Lee’s ankles start to tremble and buckle, it particularly pulled on our heartstrings: The shoes were unbelievably high (she didn’t stand a chance!), the girl behind her couldn’t help but stomp right by Lee as she sat sprawled on the runway (that’s what they’re told to do, as cold as it seems!), and we were just told Lee has broken both her ankles in the past (give the girl an effin’ flat, people!). We’re sure she’s still a tad embarrassed, but fear not, Abbey: While some girls have completely fallen off the fashion show radar once they’ve become runway roadkill (at one Gucci show, Michelle de Swarte fell at least twice—remember her? Neither do we), lots of girls bounce back. Falling at Vivienne Westwood did nothing to hinder the career of Naomi Campbell. And look at Jessica Stam, who absolutely bit it at a Chloé show a few years back. She not only laughed that off, but she’s counting her campaigns—Bulgari, DKNY, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, and more—on two hands.
