blasblog: susan sarandon honored by montblanc

September 11, 2008  1:17 am

It’s been said that a good hostess ensures that her party has three things: laughter, tears, and some form of entertainment. Well, at Tuesday’s luncheon and awards ceremony for the Montblanc de la Culture Award at the Angel Orensanz Center, which went this year to Susan Sarandon, that hostess would have had a grand ol’ time. The schedule’s mistress of ceremonies, Whoopi Goldberg, provided the laughter; Sarandon herself provided the tears when her 14-year-old son Miles Robbins performed an original song to honor her acceptance of the award; and the entertainment came in the form of legendary tapper Savion Glover, who dedicated one of his sets to the Oscar-winning actress. The annual award also honors charitable foundations of the recipient’s choice. Sarandon picked two: Pandas International and Responsibility, a Mexico-based charity started by David Lynch, which raises awareness and financial support for young people in the arts. “The arts. Empowerment. Reaching out to new places,” she said. “It’s important to give our kids stuff to accomplish, because without fostering the imagination you can’t make the world better.”
