blasblog: the elusive irina lazareanu

I’ve had a few Irina Lazareanu sightings this week, but none of them have been on the runway. I bumped into her once in Soho, where the model/musician lives; we greeted each other at both the Purple magazine dinner this weekend and the Vogue/Cole Haan party the next day; and I could see her yukking it up with Juliette Lewis at the 3.1 Phillip Lim show yesterday. But finally, at last night’s V magazine party on the roof of the Mini Cooper event space in Hell’s Kitchen, we discussed why in the (fashion) world she hasn’t been on the catwalk yet. “To be honest, I wanted to take a season off,” Lazareanu told me. “I wanted to focus on my music, and not be distracted. I wanted to relax and write. And I wanted to give them a chance to miss me. Do you think they’ll miss me?” Besides her oddly offbeat runway walk, one thing that we would miss—if she wasn’t so generous with it even when off the runway—is her quirky personal style. Lat night, she had on denim shorts hidden under a sequin shirt-cum-dress, ankle boots, and a feather. Why? “Why the hell not? I wanted to look like I lost my mind, which a lot of people think anyway.”
