chai, right on target

He had them at “hello.” From its first exit, Richard Chai’s Spring ‘09 show was a litany of covetability—body-skimming metallics, cropped sleeveless jackets, and ruffled microfloral print dresses all sent one scrambling for space in the mental closet. Not to say that Chai—a Marc Jacobs and TSE veteran with his finger firmly on the pulse of the market—hasn’t previously designed collections with similarly instant commercial appeal, but the shopability of Spring ‘09 raised the question: Was Chai stealing tricks from his recent—and quite successful—collaboration with Target? “I definitely learned a lot working with Target,” he reflected backstage after the show, “but I don’t think any of those lessons really applied to this collection. It was more like an education on what to do or not do if I ever want to launch a secondary line.” One suggestion: microflorals, please.
