chic and sweaty: the interview party

September 5, 2008  7:43 pm

“This the chicest shitshow I have ever been to.” While I’d love to tell you who said that about last night’s Interview magazine party at André Balazs’ not-even-close-to-being-finished Standard hotel in the Meatpacking District, I can’t, because: a) I probably promised them I wouldn’t, and b) about six people said it. At this little fête celebrating Fabien Baron and Glenn O’Brien’s redesign of the original Andy Warhol title, there were long lines, big crowds, overflowing elevators, and beads of sweat dripping down nearly everyone’s necks. Outside, on the perimeter of the crowd of people waiting to get close enough to even check in, local drag queens were doing spur-of-the-moment runway battles (only stopping to compliment the inspirational trots of the likes of Jessica Stam and Stephanie Seymour). Half the party didn’t want to go up to the party because it was so smolderingly hot (apparently, the air-conditioning hadn’t been fully installed yet). But despite these inconveniences and everyone’s moaning, the revelers were having a damn good time. It was, as the consensus put it, a chic shitshow where everyone from Mary-Kate Olsen to Donna Karan to Tory Burch were letting loose. Maybe they were taking the lead of Balazs himself. At one point, as he meandered through his hotel with his daughter, he started sipping from random discarded party drinks. “What?” he teased his horrified offspring. “It’s a party!”
