fashion, no frills

Somewhere behind Kings Cross train station last night, down a dimly lit street, a suspiciously stylish crowd gathered in front of a shop window. On display were four men and women in coveralls standing stock-still, holding miniature televisions. Some sort of performance art event? Not quite. This was the introductory scene to the launch of Hywel Davis’ new book, 100 New Fashion Designers. The event, held at the Diesel building, wasn’t about partying for partying’s sake—this was an extension of a book that celebrates authenticity and individuality in artistic creation. On one wall, partygoers were faced with three huge photo murals of Davis’ favorite designers: Wasir Mazar, Jonathan Saunders, Frank Lierder. On the opposite wall, 100 different films were projected, each one created by the designers especially for the night. For his part, Davis was in good spirits. “I had no idea so many people would come! It’s gratifying for me, and all those brilliant people in my book.”
