gossip girl, new york’s great unifier

It was only appropriate that at the Dior Beauty and Tinsley Mortimer-hosted screening of the season premiere of high school drama Gossip Girl (Mortimer makes a cameo) last night, guests proudly and quickly aligned themselves with cliques. Jessica Stam revealed that she was there to pledge her allegiance to Harley Viera Newton, who was the night’s DJ. Fabiola Beracasa let it be known that she was a staunch Tinsley posse executive. Designer Maggie Norris, who was surfing the crowd for fashion faces to work with her on a scripted fashion movie, said that she was a GG supporter. And quite a few people said they were general fans of network television that exploited adolescent sexual desire and contemporary fashions. No surprise, then, that the CW’s teen drama was the night’s most influential social connector. Even Lizzy McChesney, a DJ more likely to be spotted behind the decks of Lit or the Beatrice Inn than trawling the Columbia campus hoping for a Chase Crawford spotting, relented she had seen her fair share of episodes. “Fine, I’ll admit it. I like the show,” she said. “I’m here, aren’t I? The jig is up.” Mortimer also weighed in. “I do think that Dan and Serena should get back together,” she said. “But I’m not so sure about that Chuck and Blair pairing.” Chances are she isn’t on the inside track of any plot lines, but for a girl who’s made a career out of living a life not too unlike the glamorous ones on this very show, we’re inclined to follow her hunch.
