“You can always tell if a party is good, not by the quantity of gate-crashers but the quality,” said Fergus Lawlor, owner of London PR agency Purple. “And these crashers are particularly good,” he continued, nodding at the well-dressed couple in the corner, quaffing Champagne. In other words, it was a bun fight at Rei Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market on Monday night. The event was a launch party for milliner Stephen Jones, who’s created an eponymous perfume for Kawakubo’s line, Commes des Garçons. Presented in a replica nineteenth-century ink bottle that’s packaged inside—what else?—a miniature hat box, the perfume is a piquant little number with a distinctly apothecary vibe. Naomi Campbell, a Euro A-list, including Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani, socials Sophie Hesketh and Donna Air, and a good dose of the city’s beau monde crammed into Kawakubo’s shop to tip their hat, so to speak, to the much-loved Jones. Amid the bedlam, the man of the hour remained unruffled. “It’s been two years in the making,” he said of his perfume. “Adrian [:Joffee, Kawakubo’s husband and business partner], Rei, and I worked on the scents from instinct. I mean, it’s not like we were stirring vats of perfume in the backyard—but, hmm, actually, on second though, almost.”
