la perla: more than just knickers

September 5, 2008  12:17 pm

When Suzy Biszantz, the CEO of La Perla’s North American operations, started her job four months ago, she faced a conundrum. Sure, when people think of fancy panties and swanky bust lines, La Perla is often the first brand that comes to mind. But La Perla, which has more than 1,800 employees in Italy, does swim and ready-to-wear, too, a fact that’s sometimes forgotten. “I just met Suzy and asked what she was wearing,” actress Joy Bryant said at a fête celebrating the line’s intimates, apparel, and swimwear on the roof of the Empire Hotel on Thursday night. “And when she told me she was wearing La Perla, I thought she wanted me to look at her underwear. Then I remembered ya’ll did that stuff, too.” According to Biszantz, who was clad in a slim-fitting La Perla column dress, reminding people the company has expanded beyond knickers was the exact reason for the party. “Our ready-to-wear is something that we’re proud of,” she said. “And I think that the word is slowly getting out there.” Well, she—and, it should be mentioned, Alessandro Dell’Acqua, who designs the collection—must be doing something right: Zoe Saldana, Fabiola Beracasa, Perrey Reeves, Sasha Cohen, and Eva Amurri all showed up to look at the collections shown on live models.
