mara hoffman swim: prints, yes; slippage, no

September 3, 2008  1:00 pm

“Laid-back” is definitely the appropriate posture for poolside lounging, but come next summer, the experience is getting a touch more punch. Building on the success of the graphic suits she’s included in previous collections, Mara Hoffman is launching a swimwear line for Spring ‘09, and as she puts it, the new range has given her an opportunity to “go off” on print. “With swimwear, the canvas is so much smaller, so you can really go to town on the patterns,” she says. “You’re not going to hit that ‘too much’ limit.” Though Hoffman confesses that she herself is a tried-and-true triangle-top girl, the debut collection of her swimwear features one- and two-piece styles in a variety of cuts, none for the particularly faint of heart. Some reassurance for fretful beach babes: As Hoffman notes, she’s no fan of flimsy suits, or slippage. “I collect vintage swimwear. I have a whole bunch of Adrienne Vittadini suits from the eighties, and when I look at the way those pieces are constructed, it’s so obvious that a suit can be sturdy and sexy at the same time.”
