Mark Rothko’s sparse and poignant abstract paintings have had an immense influence on artists, designers, and other cultural movers and shakers. In London, the Tate Modern’s gray-walled Rothko room, where his nine Seagram murals are on permanent display, is one of the city’s greatest artistic sights. Yet there hasn’t been a major retrospective of Rothko’s work in the U.K. for over 20 years. Beginning this week, the Tate is rectifying that oversight with Rothko, which will feature not only the Seagram murals, which were originally commissioned for the Four Seasons Restaurant in the Seagram Building in New York City, but masterworks on loan from Japan, many of which were created in the last decade of the painter’s life. Together, these works will testify to the towering emotional impact that color on canvas can achieve.
