milan’s great escapes: gressoney

Milan is one of the world’s best transit towns, a fact that more than makes up for its never-ending traffic and the smog that blankets the city. Style.com offers mini-itineraries of interesting places to visit that are close enough to the city to be accessible but far enough away to give you a break.
Sestriere, Courmayeur, and Chamonix are the more well-known mountain resort towns near Milan, but if you prefer to stay away from mass tourist destinations, we suggest you bypass them in favor of Gressoney, at the base of Monte Rosa. Just two hours from Milan, this quaint town sits in a sunny valley where the list of outdoor activities, both summer and winter, is endless. Important to note are the 200 kilometers of pistes—more than adequate for even the most insatiable skiers. The black slope, Punta Jolanda, is considered the best. For accommodations, in the top position, with wood-paneled walls and that cozy mountain feel, is Hotel Jolanda Sport. Working your way down the price list means that things get more basic, but they’re always adequate. We recommend dining at Locanda ai Ponti Romani, Challand-Saint-Victor, Fraz, Vervaz, 11 (tel: 39-0125-967-608).
