natalie kates’ art and commerce

September 5, 2008  12:55 am

Given the current economic climate, thoughts of “having” and, perhaps more aptly, “having not” have undoubtedly crossed the minds of more than a few New Yorkers, including self-described “style curator” Natalie Kates, whose first group exhibition, Power and Currency, opens at Brooklyn’s Factory Fresh Gallery tomorrow. Kates, a former model, stylist, and DJ, is also a consultant and contemporary art collector, although, contrary to what one might infer from her show’s titular subject matter, the neo-graffiti lover says she doesn’t buy anything as a monetary investment. “I’ve always been fascinated by power and currency,” Kates explains. “How it is being used, wheeled, and traded, who is holding it at any given moment, the constant flux.” As to recurring elements within the 50-work show, Kates cites—surprise, surprise—money. Though discussion of that topic remains verboten in certain circles, Kates is undaunted by the idea of ruffling a few feathers. “To some it’s still taboo. But it can’t be avoided. The artists in this show are willing to confront the theme head on.” Ka-ching.
