red frocks, black pugs: a night with valentino

September 4, 2008  10:44 am

“It’s really a love story,” said Matt Tyrnauer, director of Valentino: The Last Emperor, the latest addition to that most luscious (and hilarious) of mini-genres: the designer documentary. Tyrnauer walked the red carpet (his third in a week, he said) last night for the opening of an exhibition, The Red Thread: The Inspiration and Passion of Valentino Garavani, an homage to the Italian design legend, which features trailers of said film. Once Alan Cumming, Katie Lee Joel, Nigel Barker, and a long swath of fashion-related reality-TV contestants had filed inside, Valentino made his entrance in French cuffs and patent leather. His one-time muse Liv Tyler, clad in a less sanguine, more peachy shade of his signature red, accompanied him. “It’s very pretentious of me to say, but,” Valentino said anyway, “in Venice”—where the film premiered last week at the Film Festival—”it was a huge success!” Inside, before one of several display cases containing his designs, Valentino was introduced to a black pug named Fred and took to the animal immediately, cooing into its face. (He owns six of the breed, all with names that begin with the letter “M.”) “Oh!” exclaimed Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino’s life and business partner. “We lost him now!”
