RU ready for the new susan cianciolo?

September 9, 2008  8:37 pm

Anyone who’s visited the Mini Cooper space this fashion season can attest to the fact that the West Side aerie has its charms: an excellent selection of beverages, for example, and on a clear day, a rather spiffy view. But the Mini Cooper roof really maximized its potential on Sunday, as it played host to Susan Cianciolo’s Spring ‘09 runway show. Rarely has a day, a venue, and a designer’s vibe been so perfectly in sync: The sun was shining, a small drum circle was perched on the grassed-over rooftop heath, and Cianciolo’s organic clothes, produced with new collaborator RU Concept, seemed like just the thing to wear on a perfect Sunday in the sky. The collection itself marked both a return to Cianciolo’s raw-stiched, hand-screened roots and a leap forward in terms of her aesthetic—kimono tops and dresses, for example, married elegance and homespun appeal and, not incidentally, seemed destined to find Cianciolo favor at retail. “I do feel like it’s a very different collection for me,” Cianciolo noted, her four-month-old baby Lilac Sky perched on her hip. “I was feeling more minimal this season, and working with RU really directed me. They gave me a space out in Brooklyn and I was out there with Lilac, screening, and maybe something as simple as being in a new environment gave me the freedom to focus.”
