shanghai tang to get a makeover

Shanghai Tang’s core fan base has traditionally favored the retailer’s ethnic prints, cheongsams, Mao jackets, and Chinese tchotchkesluxurious gear to be sure, but a bit thin on the high fashion cred. That looks to be changing: Richemont, which owns a controlling share in the company, has announced that the Central Saint Martins-trained Joseph Li, who’s worked with Alber Elbaz, is taking on the role of chief designer, with his inaugural collection to be Spring ‘09. This would seem to signal that the retailer is ready to seriously upgrade its style sense; Li is not only promising to tone down the more-fluorescent colors, but he’s even going to introduce some Elbaz-esque techniques like laser cutting, pleating, and draping.
