Shipley and Halmos, the Musical

September 7, 2008  10:27 pm

“By Sam” was the pithy credit provided for the musical accompaniment to Friday’s Shipley & Halmos show, and sure enough, the Sam in question was none other than Sam Shipley. Not that the designer had ever intended his song The Quiet Woman to make such a public debut. According to Jeff Halmos, a certain amount of arm-twisting was required before his partner-in-design consented to cue up the track. “He took some convincing,” recalled Halmos. “I mean, he’d been working on the song for a while at home, and when I heard it, I thought it was perfect for the show. But Sam wasn’t so sure.” Though Shipley himself seemed pleased by the positive response to The Quiet Woman, he seems disinclined to trade in his fashion business for a new career as an aspiring indie-rock star. “I have a band, it’s called War Bonnet,” he said. “I’ve always had bands. It’s fun. But we’re not super-ambitious about getting out and playing. Our goal is to do our first live show before New Year’s. So, other than the fact that we’ve all got other, real-life stuff that we do, theoretically the band has some time to prepare.”
