Designer update

space saver: vena cava take on sun ra

September 6, 2008  8:51 am

Vena Cava designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock, who are showing this afternoon, have already won Spring 2009’s top prize for best inspiration ever, taking home the gold this season for their seventies-era Egyptomania theme, inspired by the film Space Is the Place, starring Sun Ra. Aspiring designers, take note: You land on the CFDA/Vogue short list when you can mill a set of influences like that into a collection of 40-odd pieces that are wearable, sophisticated, and recognizably your own. And Buhai and Mayock have added a bonus inpiration, too: fish. “When we signed up with Via Spiga to collaborate on a collection of shoes, they flew us out to Italy to do research,” explains Mayock. “And it was just mind-blowing, the kinds of materials you can make into shoes.” Adds Buhai: “Like monkfish. And salmon.” Both monkfish skin and salmon skin made it into the Vena Cava/Via Spiga debut capsule, alongside a flat thong sandal with collagelike jewelry embellishment and a studded platform slide Buhai insists is comfortable enough to wear out on a dog walk. “Hey, we live in New York,” Buhai says with a laugh. “Even when you’re out walking your dog, you’ve got to look good.”
