sporty spice at nuj novakhett

“Going to sporting events, like car racing, and seeing all the women in jeans and T-shirts and caps made me wonder, ‘Why so casual?’ ” said Thai designer Nuj Novakhett about the inspiration for her Spring 2009 collection presented yesterday at 320 Studios. Novakhett’s proposal for what lady fans should don instead was an eclectic mix of dresses and separates with a late eighties feel—with the addition of some shoulder pads, the royal-blue silk wrap dress with an attached choker wouldn’t look out of place on the set of Dynasty, and it would be no stretch to imagine a young Madonna rocking the black strapless number with a metallic sheen. And while we’re not sure we’ll see many of these looks in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium, the primary-colored palette kept with the designer’s sporty-goes-upscale inspiration, as did the dynamic rotating grid that the models posed in.
