sweet, sweet jane

For some New Yorkers, the storefront at 315 Bowery will always and forever be the home of CBGB. Current tenant John Varvatos may in fact be one of those people: Varvatos has turned his store in the former CB’s space into something of a rock ‘n’ roll shrine, and last night he presented the latest in a series of concerts at the shop, this one a gig by new Varvatos campaign star and ex-Jane’s Addiction lead singer Perry Farrell. The designer gave the intro, bullet-pointing Farrell’s “innovations”: Jane’s Addiction, Porno for Pyros, the Lollapalooza festival. Farrell emerged and the crowd went wild—though a little prompting was required from Farrell in order to turn the wildness dial up to 11. “Make some noise! We’re live on Sirius Satellite Radio! You want the listeners to hear you, right?” Yes, apparently, and perhaps the loudest cheers were coming from the party guests who’d spotted ex-Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro standing coolly in the wings. Indeed, a mini-Jane’s reunion was in the works—at last, Navarro got up onstage with his former bandmate, and the crowd needed no prompting whatsoever as together they lit into a rendition of “Jane Says.” On Sirius Satellite Radio, you can hear the fans singing along.
