the clue in the cupcake

September 7, 2008  8:16 pm

Though the fashion show gift bag is more often absentmindedly pillaged and left for dead rather than studied for clues to a designer’s inspirations, sometimes a look into the semiotics of swag can be rewarding. Take the cupcake-shaped soap in yesterday’s Andy & Debb bags. No random offering, it was the symbolic key to the collection. “We were baking with our children one day,” explained Debb, “and we noticed how sculptural cupcake liners are. So we used them, and cupcakes, as the basis for the collection.” Hence the blouses that recall swirls of icing and the fluted skirts that bring to mind the cupcake’s paper base. Speaking of which, why didn’t the couple tuck the real thing into the bags? “Well, we weren’t sure if fashion people would eat them.”
