the thrill of thrift

September 10, 2008  12:00 am

Last night marked the fifth anniversary of Kathryn Finney’s foray into the blogosphere, and her online alter ego—the inherently practical and sartorially savvy Budget Fashionista—was out in full force. “Women are definitely more aware—they’re smarter,” Finney, who has a master’s in epidemiology from Yale, noted of the changes she’s seen in her half-decade as a best-selling author and blogger. “Consumers in general have more of a fashion aesthetic, mainly because so many designers, like Isaac Mizrahi or Vera Wang, have appealed to the mass market.” Still, not everyone in attendance at the party, which took place, appropriately enough, at Chelsea’s Housing Works Thrift Store, could lay claim to having strictly Target tastes. While an Hervé Léger-clad Roshumba Williams pointed out that she spent less than $20 for her turquoise earrings to offset the cost of her pricey persimmon bandage dress, Carson Kressley proudly admitted that he only paid $800 for his gold-embroidered Ralph Lauren Black Label jacket (originally $2,500) at Century 21. “Yes, it’s still a lot of money, and I look like Ellen DeGeneres going to the Grand Ole Opry,” Kressley laughed, “but I love the thrill of the hunt.”
