Designer update

tommy hilfiger, american icon

September 12, 2008  8:27 pm

Given his myriad incarnations over the years—hip-hop acolyte, reality show enthusiast, lifestyle entrepreneur extraordinaire—Tommy Hilfiger hasn’t always been the easiest man to pin down, sartorially speaking. So how does he see his line these days? “The idea is relaxed American glamour. It’s post-hippie but pre-disco—that cusp when the eighties hadn’t been yet and the seventies hadn’t ended yet,” Hilfiger explained yesterday backstage at Avery Fisher Hall. Muse-wise, the designer envisioned a dizzyingly well-rounded woman for whom excess is gauche and balance is key. “She’s an international woman on the go—someone who’s on a journey, who’s doing something with her life. She likes fashion but she’s not a fashion addict. She doesn’t take herself so seriously.” So how seriously does Hilfiger take his “American icon” status? “I think that my logo—the red, white, and blue flag—is an icon. But,” he paused, “I think that I am going to be an American icon when I die.”
