Designer update

velvet bagging it

September 22, 2008  6:41 pm

Roberta di Camerino probably isn’t a name that would resonate with say, Leighton Meester, but for bag aficionados and collectors (like Anna Sui), it’s sacred. Giuliana Cohen di Camerino’s line took off in the fifties (Grace Kelly was a fan), when the designer, who had gone to Switzerland to escape Fascist race laws, returned to Venice. The trademarks of di Camerino’s bags have always been distinctive hardware, trompe l’oeil conceits, and a lavish use of velvet (made on eighteenth-century looms). Expect more of the same when the brand is relaunched in Milan this week. Giorgia Scarpa, a Prada and Christian Dior alumna, is the creative director, and she told us she hopes to mix the house’s history with contemporary needs. “It’s a brand I’ve loved from my childhood, she said. “For a bag designer, this is a great opportunity.”
