a flare for retail

October 24, 2008  3:42 pm

For the past ten years Fred Flare’s super-perky brand of cute has been available on its Web site, but tonight, in celebration of its first decade in business, the company is opening its first ever brick-and-mortar store. The location has been welcoming customers since October 10 in a soft-launch phase, but partners Chris Bick and Keith Carollo consider tonight the real deal. “We opened the week the stock market crashed, but there was no stopping the train,” Bick said. “We’ve had ‘let’s-open-a-store’ fever.” Formerly a deli, the space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, had been vacant for the past 15 years; it now resembles a kitschy ski lodge hawking necessities like talking Japanese watches, a wallet that looks like buttered toast, and a men’s underwear repair kit (we also spotted the latest book by Style.com’s Laird Borrelli-Persson in the mix. With most of the goods retailing for under $100, Bick thinks Fred Flare’s “cheap and cheerful” philosophy is perfect for these trying economic times. “People still want to shop for fun things,” he contends, cheerfully. Tonight’s opening party certainly shouldn’t lack for theatrics—Bick’s parents owned a carnival and Carollo’s were clowns, after all. Refreshments will include Champagne and cupcakes, although the closest thing to substantial food may be the hamburger phone from the movie Juno. The festivities start at 7 p.m. at 131 Meserole Avenue.

  1. Hooray for Fred Flare! Although I cannot say I have been a follower of them for a full decade, I have been for the last four years. And let me say, they’ve been some fabulously cute four years. Fred Flare has for sure enriched my life. I totally love them.

I high school, they supplied me with affordable, yet up to date styles. I couldn’t resist the temptation of the free shipping emails that were ever present in my inbox and luckily I usually didn’t have to because Fred Falre never price gouged me.

Now a days, money has become a little tighter and I no longer receive Fred Flare packages as often as I used to. However, their blogs are still like little gifts to me and keep me laughing like no other.

Obviously, Fred Flare holds a special place in my heart. I can’t wait to visit their store!
