a girl’s best friend in manhattan and mumbai

October 23, 2008  12:57 pm

For New York’s social elite, the sky may be falling along with their fortunes, but in Mumbai one need look no further than the well-groomed women filling the front row of Lakme fashion week for evidence that the Indian economic outlook is anything but grim. From Sangita Kathiwada, a member of the Kathiwada royal family, sparkling in diamonds, to Page 3 favorite Queenie Dhody, wearing her own signature line of jewelry, the audience is aglitter with precious stones. Sabina Chopra, a fashion consultant and social, summed up the scene when she said, “For Indian women, jewelry is pure luxury, and it’s also recession insensitive. People buy the jewelry first, and then the clothing to match.” Westerners might be wise to follow these women’s example—after all, diamonds keep going up in price, and in these times of financial turmoil, they really are a girl’s best friend.
