Christopher Kane had a lavish affair last night to celebrate the new £2,000 glass he’s designed for gin makers Bombay Sapphire, amusing everyone with the dress code on the invitation, “Gothic Glamour.” (”I do that everyday!” said one guest). But everyone was game for a little Halloween fun and showed up in various forms of goth, including guests Camilla Al Fayed, Jake Chapman, fashion impresario Lulu Kennedy, designers Richard Nicoll and Henry Holland, actress Camilla Rutherford, and a crowd of giggly boys, who described themselves as London’s “gin-soaked queens.”
OK, so designing a £2,000 glass doesn’t seem obvious these days, considering the economy, but it was something that Kane couldn’t refuse when asked (it’s a kind of trend these days: Alexander McQueen designed a “couture” bottle for Chivas Regal; Giles Deacon and Patrick Cox worked on a drink for Grey Goose). What’s the message—forget the economy, let’s drink ourselves into oblivion? “We thought the idea of blowing glass was really neat—it’s obviously such a different material to work with, so it seemed like a cool thing to do,” said Kane’s sister and design partner, the divine Tammy Kane: “We had so much fun that we’re trying to figure out how to get glasses on clothes!” Now that would be handy for all of us who love a tipple, but don’t like to fight our way to the bar.
