blasblog from paris: have basket, will travel (to lagerfeld gallery)

October 1, 2008  3:55 pm

When Lady Amanda Harlech, the Chanel muse and Karl Lagerfeld confidant, heard that people in the United States were stocking up on canned foods for fear that the supermarkets would go the way of the banks and shut down (just a rumor, we’re told; no need to gather your Green Giants yet), she was thankful that she has her own vegetables at her country retreat in England (the avid huntress added that she’s a good shot, too, so Doomsday looters should consider themselves forewarned). Perhaps it was this country mindset that prompted Harlech to take a basket bag to the Lagerfeld Gallery show on Wednesday morning. “It goes with my natural look,” she said backstage before things got under way. “Besides, who wouldn’t rather be on a beach right now?” Putting in his own two cents—although I think we can all agree that the Kaiser is worth more than mere pennies—Lagerfeld said, “Jane Birkin used to carry one just like that 40 years ago. I liked it then, too.”
