fairy tale meets rave on ha sang beg’s runway

October 27, 2008  3:48 pm

“My inspiration was Alice in Wonderland. I was imagining what would have happened if she fell in a pond and encountered a world of creatures, from flowers to dinosaurs,” explained designer Ha Sang Beg at his show. Ha is Seoul’s pop polymath—he presents a hugely popular style program on Mnet (Korea’s version of MTV) and is a star DJ; he’s a former top model and learned tailoring in London. His show shot a turbo jolt of energy into the staid SETEC show space. Citing Mathew Barney and Ryan McGinley as inspirations, Ha combined children’s phantasmagorical thinking, cool kids’ casual sexuality, and the most mature tailoring seen so far at Seoul fashion week. Starting with local boy-band star Shinee from GroupSinger—wearing all white and lugging an ominous silver bat like the well-attired degenerates in A Clockwork Orange or Funny Games—the show bounced deeply into nu-rave-ready acid-bright layered tank tops, fleece dresses, and baby blue men’s jackets with kimono-style draped, slashed sleeves. “I was imaging that a unicorn was cutting the clothes with its horn,” Ha explained exuberantly backstage. “I wanted to make constructed clothes with deconstructed ideas.”
