frieze’s family affair

October 9, 2008  9:55 am

Scoffing at the cynics’ refrain that contemporary art is merely child’s play, Lily Atherton Hanbury and Lady Frances von Hofmannsthal (pictured, with their kids) have made family-friendly fun the surefire hit for this year’s upcoming Frieze Art Fair. Hanbury, whose husband, Tom Hanbury, is co-owner of London’s Dicksmith Gallery, has joined with von Hofmannsthal to create Dickmrs, a gallery-cum-yurt for artistically inclined kiddies that will be tucked next door to the entrance of the fair. “VIP tickets take the form of a human under eight years old,” she explains. Once inside the yurt, pint-size art lovers will be entertained by a puppet show by Hotel gallery’s Darren Flook, wooden puzzle paintings by Sophie von Hellerman, scary stories by Tommy Diamond, and Play-Doh sculptures by Hope Atherton, Lily’s big sis. Who says that the art world is a dysfunctional family?
