We were in such a rush to interview artist Francesco Simeti that we failed to read the small print on the invitation and found ourselves at an art opening in the middle of a psychiatric hospital outside of Milan. Turns out Simeti had been invited to create a four-month workshop for patients, which resulted in, among other things, another of his signature wallpaper pieces. This time around, however, the graphics were made from a collage of his students’ work. “It was like working with minds which have no boundaries,” he said. So why wallpaper, which he sometimes creates at such a scale that it covers entire buildings? “The format suits me, you get more space, I like the repetition, but most of all I like to play with people’s preconceptions of what they think wallpaper should be. When you look closer at my pieces there is a surprise. It can be men in gas masks in a floral setting or combat helicopters hovering in an ivy trellis.” The Brooklyn-based artist’s next projects will be with Mass MoCA and Philadelphia’s The Fabric Workshop.
